When equal treatment changes the temporary-to-permanent conversation
How assignment length and equal-treatment milestones in Germany can quietly shift bargaining power before a Festanstellung offer appears.
Temporary workers in Germany often hear that “after a certain time, things change.” The phrase is vague because equal-treatment rules, collective agreements, and company practice do not always line up on the same calendar day.
For someone preparing temporary-to-permanent employment transition support, the useful question is narrower: what becomes different in my paperwork and my day-to-day pay once equal treatment applies — and how does that change the Festanstellung ask?
Mark the practical milestones
List the start date of your current assignment, any prior continuous assignments with the same host, and the dates when pay or benefits last changed. Bring those dates into a consultation rather than relying on hallway estimates.
Separate law from company habit
Some host companies convert strong temporary workers early because managers want continuity. Others wait until an agency contract is about to end. Equal treatment can strengthen your case for fair pay while you are still temporary; it does not automatically create a permanent seat.
Use timing in the conversation
If equal treatment has already improved your temporary package, a hiring manager may need help seeing why permanence still matters to you — stability, access to training budgets, or a clearer reporting line. Name that reason. Do not assume they already know.
